SDDM on Pi

Authored by kc2bez on Jan 8 2021, 7:41 PM.
<Razathorn> Hey folks, been trying in vain to get SDDM to start on a fresh install of ubuntu server 20.10 and 20.04 on raspberry pi 4. Honestly, I use kubuntu on my laptop, and sddm et al work fine if I install the desktop package and then SWITCH to sddm, but no combination of installing kubuntu-desktop task or installing sddm alone works. SDDM just stays in the background, no errors, and does not start X. X runs fine manually, GDM3 will load,
<Razathorn> and XDM will load. SDDM just... silently sits there happy as a clam with no X started. I've been monitoring dbus messages and stracing and *anything* to find a clue as to what to do next. Any advise is greatly appreciated.
<Razathorn> Made some headway on this btw, it starts now that I've used some of the pi arguments from ubuntu desktop in regard to gpu, but still no clue why X worked otherwise, like because 3d was missing, it was borked? Anyway...
<kc2bez> Razathorn: what exactly did you add?
<Razathorn> in the firmware filesystem (fat fs that contains vmlinuz and configuration and boot loader handed off from the pi) I added the following lines:
<Razathorn> dtoverlay=vc4-fkms-v3d
<Razathorn> gpu_mem=128
<Razathorn> start_x=1
<Razathorn> disable_overscan=1
<Razathorn> start_x is probably not needed as it just enables the camera port
