Unable to change the default browser on Lubuntu 18.10
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

Lubuntu 18.10 comes with firefox as the default browser. I wanted to set up Chromium as my browser, as I use multiple profiles, use 1-Password-X, chrome apps etc.

  • Both Chromium and Firefox (or any browser) have a method to set itself as default app. I notice that it is not getting honored.

Furthermore, here is my debugging that I leads me to believe that this is a bug with Lubuntu 18.10

xdg-settings get default-web-browser
jetbrains-clion.desktop

This is weird, I do not know how it was set, so

$ xdg-settings set default-web-browser chromium-browser.desktop
xdg-settings: $BROWSER is set and can't be changed with xdg-settings
$ echo $BROWSER
firefox

I figured out that it was *hard-coded* in

xdg/xdg-Lubuntu/lxqt/session.conf
6:BROWSER=firefox
  • So, in order to work around my situation, I set BROWSER variable to chromium-browser and I can use it now.

However, that seems wrong to me. I should be able to chromium-browser without needing to set it in default configuration.

After the change, this is my default on default-web-browser

xdg-settings get default-web-browser
chrome-jndclpdbaamdhonoechobihbbiimdgai-Profile_1.desktop

Furthermore, if I now install firefox, it somehow overrides this setting and becomes the default browser.
