creation of irc channels and website update with new channels.
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

we have these telegram channels

https://t.me/lubuntues (Spanish) 371 users
https://t.me/lubuntuemportugues (Portuguese) 186 users
https://t.me/Lubuntuit (Italian) 20 users
https://t.me/Lubuntu_Ru (Russian) 54 users
https://t.me/Lubuntujp (Japanese) 4 users and are admins...
https://t.me/Lubuntu_Fr (French) 13 users
https://t.me/LubuntuinChinese (Chinese) 9 users
https://t.me/LubuntuArab (Arab) 4 users and are admins...
https://t.me/Lubuntude (German) 6 members, 4 are admins...

and they need to be connected to corresponding IRC channels.

Here's the TODO:

  • Create and lock channels
  • Invite the log bot to all the channels
  • Set an entry message about logging
  • Set topics for all the channels
  • Get the bot everywhere
  • Open the channels (right now guard/mlock flags are set)
  • Update the official IRC channel list
  • Create factoids with the bots so we can easily point people in the right directions
  • Get all the icons made
  • Update the website

Noumeno updated the task description. (Show Details)
wxl triaged this task as Normal priority.
wxl added a subscriber: wxl.

I should mention at https://lubuntu.me/links/ there are links to Telegram, Matrix, and IRC, all with their own separate icons. Well, we need icons!

Also @Noumeno thank you SO much for setting all this up. I'll get to work on this.

many of those icons are the same, thanks @wxl !!!!!

To put this on record, the names should be:

  • Portuguese: #lubuntu-pt
  • Italian: #lubuntu-it
  • Russian: #lubuntu-ru
  • Japanese: #lubuntu-jp
  • French: #lubuntu-fr
  • Chinese: #lubuntu-cn
  • Arabic: #lubuntu-arabic
  • German: #lubuntu-de

I've confirmed that we don't need permission from the IRC Council or anything.

Regarding the icons, they are the same, except for the ones that are specific to locales. We only have the Spanish one so far. So we need the others. Essentially just paste a flag on it. Easy. Except for Arabic. Not sure what to do there. I would actually suggest asking the users on that channel for their advice!

I'm not very good at editing images, I'll try to see the result.

At this time in Arabic there is no one who is not an administrator. maybe after putting it on the website, we will have more people.

the Arab flag I see that it can be complicated ...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Arab_flags

So I created all the channels, which is the first step.

There are two exceptions:

  • #lubuntu-it
  • #lubuntu-fr

Both channels were already created. I had to get them transferred over to us.

Here are the remaining steps:

  1. Send a link to RT requesting logging.
  2. Set an entry message about logging.
  3. Set topics for all the channels (HELP NEEDED).
  4. Get lubot in all the channels.
  5. Open the channels (right now guard/mlock flags are set).
  6. Update the official IRC channel list.
  7. Create factoids with the bots so we can easily point people in the right directions (HELP NEEDED).
  8. Get all the icons made (HELP NEEDED).
  9. Update the website.

See those HELP NEEDED things? That's where I need help. I could probably handle the icons but I absolutely cannot do things that requires using a different language.

Here's what we're using for the factoid for #lubuntu-es:

  • En este canal de lubuntu, se habla sólo en inglés. Si busca ayuda en español entre al canal #lubuntu-es; escriba " /join #lubuntu-es " (sin comillas) y presione intro.

The topic on #lubuntu-es is not quite in line with the default English topic, so I'd like something like it:

Technically, there's a "Español: #lubuntu-es" in there, but I don't want to list all the channels there. When we the website updated, it would be reasonable to add something like "Other Languages: https://lubuntu.me/links."

Also, maybe we should avoid putting in offtopic and devel since they are inherently English-speaking?

Oh and maybe an idea to deal with the Arabic issue: don't use flags. Arabic itself is highly ornamental and would look lovely on one of the icons. اَلْعَرَبِيَّةُ is the word for the Arabic language, if Wikipedia is to be believed. Again, I would actually defer to the judgement of people that are Arabic speakers. I know that they are very, very widely distributed geographically.

What does this look like as an example?

Le sujet de # lubuntu-fr est «Lubuntu Support in French | À propos: https://lubuntu.me | Docs: https://manual.lubuntu.me | Lubuntu 20.04 LTS est sorti! https://lubuntu.me/focal-released/ | Soutien: #lubuntu | Offtopic: # lubuntu-offtopic | Contribuez: # lubuntu-devel | Langues internationales: https://lubuntu.me/links | Liste de diffusion: https://lists.ubuntu.com/lubuntu-users | Telegram: https://t.me/Lubuntu_Fr »

ok, then I continue with the rest of the languages ;)

I've got the bot on all the IRC channels except for -arabic. Something is wrong there. Since it goes by channel name, my guess is it's an RTL issue.

I think the bot needs to be invited to all the channels and then greeted. Can you take care of that @Noumeno ?

  1. Invite "Lubuntu Bridge Bot" (username #lubuntu_bot) to each of the Telegram channels.
  2. Say hi directly to it, making sure to @mention it

First of all, thank you so much for the quick response!!!!!!!

Check out the edited description list for additional pieces missing.

The new thing you will see is the logging message needing to be translated. The text would be "Welcome to #ChannelName. This channel is logged. Use of this channel implies acceptance of terms at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/TermsOfService" but obviously use something relevant in place of #ChannelName :)

Also we need the matching icons for Matrix and IRC.

Regarding the channels being locked, that's intentional while I get them all set up.

factoid:

I have problems with the topics for:

  • #lubuntu-ru
  • #lubuntu-jp
  • #lubuntu-arabic

All of them get cut off, even after I removed the bit about (English) support. Maybe I should remove the offtopic and development channels? I'd consider them more English specific, no?

I modified all the topics accordingly so that they do not mention any other IRC channels.

At this point, all channels except for -arabic should be all set with the exception of the factoids and the website, so functionally we're in business!

I got all the factoids set up. I opted not to make factoids within all the localized channels as I can't imagine someone coming to the Chinese channel so they could find out how to get to the French channel. It also saves me a heck of a lot of time XD

jejejejee ;) great job!!!

en français
in italiano
日本語で jp
用中文(表達 cn
بالعربية
auf Deutsch
em português
по-русски

is the translation of "in English" into their respective languages. Is correct???

For Discourse

Oh no, great job to you and the rest of the folks providing support for all of these users which we otherwise couldn't reach well before.

P.S. don't forget about the remaining icons needed!

I'm going to start with that now ;) Matrix and IRC? is OK?.

Right, so we need one icon for Telegram (like we currently have for -es with the flag), one for IRC (-es is there but isn't using a flag, which it should), and one for Matrix (same as with IRC). Hope that makes sense.

telegram icons are here , https://phab.lubuntu.me/T177#3844

I will start now with the rest

Thanks! Don't forget I need the Telegram one for Portuguese.

Thanks! @kc2bez is going to hack at the website. Meanwhile, when you have time, it would be nice to get the icons for Arabic. At the very least, we should advertise the Telegram channel. And eventually I'm going to figure out what's up with TeleIRC.

for Arabic as it does not have a flag, maybe the default icon would be enough? How do we solve this?

I was thinking maybe we use the word "Arabic." We could use the one you gave me for Discourse (بالعربية) or the one I found on Wikipedia (اَلْعَرَبِيَّةُ) or something else that Arabic-speakers might suggest. Ask them!

Maybe we should wrap the two together, so the text would be something like "Other languages/support options." So we'd need a translation.

for Other languages/support options ?

For which languages ?, for all or only for those that do not enter all the characters?

I think in an ideal world we should do all of them so we don't have to rethink this again. I'll also change the main topic to match. That way when we change the topic, it's just a matter of getting the main one translated instead of working out specific things for specific channels.
